Sea breeze at La Palme: flat water, ideal for learning

The tramontane is not the only wind that brings the Leucate spot to life. The sea breeze, less well known, offers conditions that are just as valuable for learning — here is why.

Tramontane and sea breeze: two wind patterns in Leucate

The tramontane is an offshore wind, strong and gusty, blowing from the north-west. The sea breeze is a wind — often thermal — that builds in from the sea during the day: usually more gradual, and it opens a riding window quite different from the tramontane's.

Why La Palme stays flat in a sea breeze

The La Palme lagoon is sheltered water, shielded from the open-sea swell. In a sea breeze, that layout keeps the water flat, without the chop you would meet in the open sea in the same wind.

Why flat water makes learning easier

With no waves to deal with, you can put all your attention into flying the kite and finding your balance, without the extra difficulty of rough water. Waterstarts are more predictable and falls are gentler — two things that matter a great deal in your first sessions.

The sea breeze widens your riding windows

Added to the tramontane days, the sea breeze multiplies the chances to progress regularly, instead of depending on a single wind pattern to plan your sessions.

One thing to watch: the water level

Riding at La Palme also requires enough water in the lagoon — something that is not guaranteed all year, and often lacking in summer. Your instructor assesses the day's conditions before every session, water level included, not just wind strength, so as to spare you painful falls. Usually, walking a few more metres is enough to find a good depth.

A useful seasonal note

In summer the lagoon naturally gets shallower — but that is no problem at all for learning. Shallower water is actually reassuring early on: you can stand up more easily, which helps you feel confident on the water. It is mainly for advanced aerial moves that the lower level becomes a real constraint, not for beginner lessons.

How the school adapts your sessions to the day's wind

Whether it is a tramontane day or a sea-breeze day, your instructor adjusts the session plan to the actual conditions — the goal stays the same: progress safely, whatever the wind is doing that day.
